Tastes of the Town Dining Guide

Chez Henri, One Shepard Street, Cambridge, (617) 354-8980. A modern French bistro with a Cuban twist located near Harvard Square. The menu features updated versions of classic bistro cuisine with a Latin accent, such as steak with yuca frites. The bar serves Cuban-style tapas (empanadas, grilled homemade chorizo) until midnight. Besides the la carte menu, prix fixe dinners in the French manner are available.

Anago Bistro, 798 Main Street, Cambridge, (617) 876-8444. Chef Bob Calderone presents creative, flavorful food reflecting a mingling of American and European regional styles. He places particular emphasis on vegetables, notably a blue cheese and onion tart appetizer and a baked vegetable and goat cheese casserole with grilled flatbread as an entre. This light and airy spot offers a quiet oasis near the hubbub of Central Square.

Providence, 1223 Beacon Street (near Coolidge Corner), Brookline, (617) 232-0300. American interpretations of European classics, with emphasis on wood grilling, are served in an ornate dining room. Specialties include cured and smoked veal brisket "pastrami-style" and chestnut chocolate marjolaine.

Pignoli, 79 Park Plaza, Boston, (617) 338-7500. Lydia Shire and Susan Regis, the chefs behind Biba, have applied their flair for avant-garde cuisine and dramatic dcor to Pignoli. Interesting first courses include the smoked salmon "scarves" with roasted pear, potato, and salmon roe and the beet linguine with spring greens, lemon crumbs, and ricotta salata. Even the bread basket offers delicious surprises. But leave plenty of room for entres such as peppered tuna with balsamic glaze, watercress, and spicy celery sauce, or the roast duck agrodolce with sweet potato jam and spinach strudel.
