SPECIAL. The Schlesinger Library celebrates its sixtieth anniversary with an all-day conference on "Gender, Race, and Rights in African-American Women’s History" on October 3. For registration, call 617-495-8922.

The annual ice-skating exhibition An Evening with Champions, organized by the students at Eliot House, takes place at the Bright Hockey Center on October 10-11 at 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Jimmy Fund and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. FILM. The Harvard Film Archive offers several series this fall, including Remembering Romy Schneider (September 12-22), a tribute to the Austrian-born actress; The Films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder (October 3-29); and The Films of Tsai Ming-liang (October 4-7), which concludes with a visit by the Taiwanese director to discuss his latest work, The Skywalk Is Gone. MUSIC. On October 31 at 8 p.m., Sanders Theatre hosts the Annual Dartmouth Concert, "Salute to the Chief, and the Harvard University Police Department," dedicated to the late HUPD chief Robert Tonis. The program features the Harvard University Band and guest trombonist Ron Barron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Harvard Jazz Band also performs swing-era music. EXHIBITIONS. Opening September 18 at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is Portraits from China, 1923-1946, which highlights the work of three modern photographers: Hedda Hammer Morrison, Owen Lattimore, and Frederick R. Wulsin. Ongoing at the Peabody is Painted by a Distant Hand: Mimbres Pottery from the American Southwest and These Shoes Were Made For…Walking?—an eclectic array of assorted footwear from around the world. Harvard Collects American Art, at the Fogg, traces the University’s holdings from the colonial period through the twentieth century and includes works by Winslow Homer, Charles Sheeler, and Jackson Pollock, among others. Also at the Fogg is City of Sardis: Approaches to Graphic Recordings, an exhibition of 50 objects that elucidate the topography and historic landscape of the ancient Turkish city. On display through October 26 at the Sackler is Medardo Rosso: Second Impressions, an in-depth look at five of the modern sculptor’s works.
